Water pump replacement cost calculator

Work out what replacing a water pump will cost from the part, the labor, and the coolant. The pump itself is inexpensive; the bill is the labor to reach it, and on many engines it sits behind the timing belt, which is exactly why you replace the belt at the same time. The calculator adds it up.

§ 01 Your numbers

Change anything. The answer updates as you type.

The pump itself, usually inexpensive. A pump driven by the timing belt often comes in a kit with the belt and tensioners, which is the sensible buy.
The real cost. A pump driven by the accessory belt and out in the open is quick; one behind the timing belt takes hours of removing covers and the belt to reach.
The shop's hourly rate. Dealers and specialists charge more than a general shop.
Fresh coolant to refill the system, a new gasket or seal, and thermostat if done at the same time.
If the pump is behind the timing belt, replacing the belt and tensioners at the same time costs little extra in labor and saves a future job. Zero if not applicable or already done.

$400 to $900 is a pump behind the timing belt. Do the belt and tensioners at the same time; it barely adds labor.

What this assumes, and where it could be wrong

Every one of these is a place the number could be off. They are here because you should be able to check our working, not because we are hedging.

IF THE PUMP IS BEHIND THE TIMING BELT, DO THE BELT TOO.
On many engines the water pump is driven by the timing belt and buried behind it, so reaching the pump means removing the covers and the belt anyway. That labor is most of the cost, and it is the same labor the timing belt job needs, so replacing the belt and tensioners at the same time costs a little more in parts and almost nothing more in labor. Doing the pump alone and the belt later means paying the big labor twice

The labor is all about access, and it varies enormously. A water pump driven by the external accessory belt and sitting out in the open is a quick job; one behind the timing belt, or deep in the engine, is hours of work. The pump costs about the same either way, so the total is decided almost entirely by where the pump sits on your engine.

A failing water pump is not a repair to delay. The pump circulates coolant, so if it fails the engine overheats, and an overheated engine can warp the head or worse, a repair many times a water pump. A weeping pump, a coolant leak, or a whine from the front of the engine is a reason to act soon, not to wait.

Replace the thermostat and coolant while it is open. The system is drained and apart for the pump, so refilling with fresh coolant is necessary anyway, and swapping the thermostat, a cheap part, while everything is accessible avoids another job if it fails later. Small additions that make sense during the same visit.

The defaults are ours and are a starting point. The part, the labor, and any timing-belt bundle are yours, and the estimate turns almost entirely on whether the pump is easy to reach or hidden behind the timing belt.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to replace a water pump?
It is mostly labor. The pump itself is inexpensive, but reaching it can take hours if it sits behind the timing belt, and you add coolant and gaskets. The calculator above adds it up from your quote. On an easy engine it is a modest bill; on a timing-belt engine the labor makes it much more, which is why the belt is usually done at the same time.
Should I replace the timing belt with the water pump?
If the pump is driven by the timing belt, yes. Reaching one means removing the other, so the huge labor is shared, and replacing the belt and tensioners now costs little extra in labor and saves paying that labor again soon. Doing the pump alone on a timing-belt engine, then the belt later, is the expensive way to do it.
What happens if a water pump fails?
The engine overheats, because the pump is what circulates coolant. An overheated engine can warp or crack the cylinder head or blow the head gasket, which is a repair many times the cost of a water pump. That is why a leaking or whining pump should be dealt with promptly rather than driven on until it fails completely.
Why is my water pump replacement quote so high?
Almost always the labor, because of where the pump sits. On a timing-belt engine the pump is buried behind the belt and covers, so reaching it is hours of work even though the pump is cheap. A high quote usually reflects a hidden pump and, sensibly, a timing belt bundled into the same job, not an overpriced part.
