Honeymoon budget calculator

Plan what a honeymoon will actually cost before you book. Set your flights, your nights, and what you expect to spend a day, and see the total, a realistic range, and where the money goes, so the trip fits the budget instead of eating the wedding's.

§ 01 Your numbers

Change anything. The answer updates as you type.

Usually two, but set it to whatever the trip is.
Round trip, per traveler. This is the line that swings most with destination and how early you book.
How long you are away. Each night is a room plus a day of spending.
The room, per night, for the whole party. A resort with everything included costs more here but less on the food line.
What you expect to spend a day on meals and drinks, per person. Lower at an all-inclusive, higher in an expensive city.
Tours, diving, a nice dinner out, the things you are actually going for. A total for the trip, not per day.
Transfers, tips, souvenirs, the upgrade you talk yourselves into. Travel finds ways to cost more; this covers them.

$4,000 to $9,000 is a typical week away somewhere good. Insure it and put the daily spending on one card you can track.

What this assumes, and where it could be wrong

Every one of these is a place the number could be off. They are here because you should be able to check our working, not because we are hedging.

EVERY LINE IS YOURS, PRICED BY WHERE AND WHEN YOU GO.
Where you go and when you go decide the flights, the room, and the daily spend, and you bring each of them. The calculator multiplies the pieces you set, the defaults are ours and reasonable, and the whole point is to see the total before a booking site shows it to you one line at a time

The daily spend is where budgets break. Flights and rooms are easy to price because you book them once; food, drinks, transfers, and small excursions are paid a day at a time and rarely counted, which is why they get their own lines and a buffer on top.

An all-inclusive resort moves money between lines rather than removing it. The nightly rate goes up and the food line goes toward zero. Compare the total, not the headline room rate, because a cheap room with every meal out can cost more than an expensive room with none.

The buffer is not padding. Transfers from the airport, tips, a souvenir, the snorkeling upgrade, and the currency conversion all land somewhere, and a trip almost always finds a way to spend a little more than the plan.

This is the honeymoon only. It is a separate line from the wedding itself, and folding it into the wedding budget is how couples end up over on both.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a honeymoon cost?
It depends almost entirely on the destination and the season, so anyone quoting a single average is guessing. The real cost is flights times travelers, plus the room per night, plus what you spend a day on food and activities across your nights, plus a buffer. The calculator above builds it from your numbers.
How much should I budget per day on a honeymoon?
For food and incidentals, a common planning figure is what you would spend on a nice day out at home, per person, adjusted for how expensive the destination is. An all-inclusive resort pushes the daily number down and the nightly room rate up; an expensive city does the opposite. Set it to your trip.
Is an all-inclusive cheaper for a honeymoon?
Sometimes, and the way to tell is the total, not the room rate. All-inclusive folds meals, drinks, and often activities into the nightly price, so the food and activity lines drop toward zero. Whether it beats booking a room and paying as you go depends on how much you would have eaten and drunk out.
How far in advance should I book a honeymoon?
The flight line moves most with timing, so booking flights early is where the savings are. Rooms and activities are steadier. Booking six months to a year out for a peak-season destination is common, both for price and to actually get the resort you want.
