Carpet cleaning cost calculator

Work out what carpet cleaning will cost from the number of rooms and the per-room rate, before the truck arrives. It applies the minimum charge on a small job and leaves room for the stain and pet treatments that are the real upsell once the technician is standing on your carpet.

§ 01 Your numbers

Change anything. The answer updates as you type.

Count each room as a room. Cleaners usually cap the size of a 'room' and price a very large one, or a combined living-dining space, as two.
The per-room rate from the quote. A cheap headline rate often comes with a low room-size cap and add-ons; a higher rate may include more.
The floor for sending a truck out. One or two rooms often falls under it, so the small job pays the minimum.
Pet odor treatment, tough-stain work, and a stain protector are the upsell quoted on the day. Zero if you decline them.
A flight of stairs is usually priced separately from rooms, per step or per flight. Zero if none.

Under about $150 is one or two rooms at the minimum charge. Add rooms to reach the value the minimum already covers.

What this assumes, and where it could be wrong

Every one of these is a place the number could be off. They are here because you should be able to check our working, not because we are hedging.

THE PER-ROOM PRICE IS THE HOOK; THE TREATMENTS ARE THE BILL.
A low per-room rate gets the truck to your door, and then the pet odor treatment, the tough-stain work, and the stain protector are quoted once the technician is standing on the carpet. None of that is a scam, but it is where a modest job quietly doubles, so decide in advance which add-ons you actually want rather than on the spot

Watch the definition of a room. Cheap per-room rates usually come with a size cap, and a large living room or a combined living-dining space is charged as two. A quote of five rooms for a house with big open spaces can arrive as seven. Ask what counts as a room before you compare two quotes.

The minimum charge rules a one or two-room job. Sending a truck, a machine, and a technician out has a floor, so cleaning a single room often costs the same as two or three. If you only need one room done, it is worth adding others to reach the value the minimum already buys.

Method changes the price and the dry time. Hot-water extraction (steam) is the common deep clean and takes hours to dry; low-moisture or encapsulation cleaning is faster to dry and sometimes cheaper, but is a lighter clean. If a quote is unusually low, check which method it is.

The defaults are ours and are a starting point. The rooms, the rate, and the minimum are yours, and the estimate is only as good as the room count once the cleaner's size cap is applied.

Frequently asked questions

How much does carpet cleaning cost?
It is priced per room or per square foot, with a minimum charge for small jobs. A few rooms is commonly one to two hundred dollars before add-ons, and a whole house more, but stain and pet treatments can add as much again. The numbers are the cleaner's, so the calculator uses your rate rather than an invented average.
Why is carpet cleaning more expensive than the advertised price?
Because the advertised per-room rate is the hook. Once the technician arrives, pet odor treatment, tough-stain work, a stain protector, and stairs are quoted on top, and a room-size cap can turn your five rooms into seven. Deciding which add-ons you want before they arrive is how you keep the bill near the quote.
How many rooms will a carpet cleaner count my house as?
More than you might, if the rate has a size cap. Cleaners often cap a 'room' at around two hundred square feet, so a large living room or an open living-dining area is charged as two. Ask each company what counts as a room, because a low per-room rate with a small cap can cost more than a higher rate with a generous one.
Is steam cleaning worth the extra cost?
Steam cleaning, or hot-water extraction, is the deeper clean and the one most manufacturers recommend, but it takes hours to dry. Low-moisture methods are faster and sometimes cheaper but lighter. For a deep clean or a heavily soiled carpet, steam is usually worth it; for a quick refresh, low-moisture may be enough.
