Junk removal cost calculator

Work out what a junk removal job will cost before the truck shows up, from how much of it you are filling and the hauler's full-load price. It applies the minimum charge that makes small jobs cost more per item than you expect, and adds the surcharges for the heavy things.

§ 01 Your numbers

Change anything. The answer updates as you type.

Junk removal is priced by volume. A quarter, a half, a full truck. Estimate the fraction; the crew will confirm it on site before they load.
What the hauler charges for a completely full truck, from their quote or price list. The whole bill scales off this.
The floor most haulers set for showing up at all. A single item can cost this whether it fills 2% of the truck or not.
Surcharges for mattresses, fridges, tires, paint, or e-waste that cost the hauler to dispose of. Zero if none apply.

$200 to $600 is a typical half to full truck. Confirm the volume and any heavy-item fees before they load.

What this assumes, and where it could be wrong

Every one of these is a place the number could be off. They are here because you should be able to check our working, not because we are hedging.

JUNK REMOVAL IS PRICED BY VOLUME, AND THE MINIMUM CHARGE RULES SMALL JOBS.
Haulers charge by how much of the truck your stuff fills, not by the item, and they set a minimum for showing up. That is why a single couch can cost the same as a small pile: both trip the minimum charge. The full-load price and the minimum are the two numbers on the quote that decide your bill, and they are the hauler's, not a published rate

The volume is estimated until the crew sees it. You give a fraction of a truck; the crew confirms it before loading, and a pile always looks smaller in your head than it does in the truck. That is the main reason the range around your total is wide, and why the on-site number can climb.

Heavy and hazardous items carry their own fees. Mattresses, tires, fridges, paint, and electronics cost the hauler to dispose of legally, so they are surcharged on top of the volume. A load that is all one heavy category can cost well above its volume alone.

Doing the lifting yourself does not lower a volume price much. The bill is mostly disposal and the truck, not the labor, so hauling it to the curb yourself saves less than you would think. Where it helps is a rental-dumpster job, which is priced differently.

The defaults are ours and are a starting point. The full-load price, the minimum, and the fraction are yours, and the estimate is only as good as your guess at how much of the truck you will actually fill.

Frequently asked questions

How much does junk removal cost?
It is priced by volume: what a full truck costs, times the fraction your stuff fills, with a minimum charge for small jobs and surcharges for heavy items. A quarter-truck load and a full truck are both priced off the same full-load number you enter, so the calculator uses your hauler's quote rather than inventing an average.
Why is junk removal so expensive for one item?
Because of the minimum charge. Haulers set a floor for sending a truck and crew out at all, so a single couch or mattress often costs the same as a small pile that fills more of the truck. If you only have one or two items, the minimum is most of your bill, which is why bundling a bigger clear-out is better value per item.
Is it cheaper to rent a dumpster or hire junk removal?
For a big, spread-out project you fill over days, a rented dumpster is often cheaper because you supply the labor and time. For a one-day clear-out of heavy items you cannot lift or haul, junk removal usually wins, because the price is mostly the truck and disposal, which you would pay for either way.
What items cost extra for junk removal?
Anything that is expensive or regulated to dispose of: mattresses, tires, refrigerators and appliances with refrigerant, paint and chemicals, and electronics. These carry surcharges on top of the volume price because the hauler pays a fee to get rid of them legally. Ask which of your items are surcharged before you book.
