Pet Costs Cats

Tabby cat cost calculator

Work out what a tabby cat costs across her whole life rather than what one asks at the door. Tabby is a pattern rather than a breed, so nobody charges a premium for the stripes; what actually separates one route from another is the intake work a shelter has already done and a free kitten has not. Price both ends from your own boxes and see which one is really cheaper.

§ 01 Your numbers

Change anything. The answer updates as you type.

What the shelter or rescue in front of you charges for a tabby. Our default is ours and editable, a starting point rather than a market figure: fees swing on the organisation, the cat's age, and whether a kitten season has left them overfull. Enter 0 if your route is a neighbour's litter or a cat who turned up, and read the free-kitten end of the band below.
YOUR reading of the adoption paperwork, not a rate we measured. Many shelters hand a cat over already examined, tested, dewormed, vaccinated, altered and chipped, and the fee recovers part of that. Ask which of the boxes below are already done before you pay, then set this dial to match. Set it to 0 for a route where nothing is done, which is what a free kitten means.
The first visit for a cat of unknown history: a physical exam, the retrovirus tests, a faecal check and deworming, and treatment for the ear mites and fleas a stray usually arrives with. A shelter does this before the cat leaves the building. A porch cat does not, and skipping it is how a household with other cats finds out about FeLV the expensive way.
The core course, given as a series of visits over several weeks rather than in one appointment, plus rabies where your state requires it. Price it as the whole series rather than one shot. Our default is ours and editable; our cat vaccination page breaks the same block down on its own.
The single largest line in the intake block and the one most often already done by a shelter. A low-cost clinic charges well under a full-service practice, and a spay costs more than a neuter. If you are taking a free kitten, ring a low-cost clinic before you assume the full-practice quote is the number.
Chip plus registering it in your own name, which is the step people forget. Often bundled into an adoption and almost never done for a free kitten. Cheap against the rest of this page, and it is what gives a lost cat a route home.
Carrier, litter box, scratching post, beds and bowls. Once, at the start, and the same on either route: a shelter does not send the furniture home with you. Secondhand and handed-down gear takes this line down a long way without costing the cat anything.
Our default is a planning horizon rather than a prediction about your cat. Indoor cats commonly live into their teens, so fifteen is a reasonable frame to budget across. Set it to your own horizon and read the per-year figure if that is the number you are deciding on.
Wet and dry food at the quality you intend to feed, plus treats. A tabby is an ordinary-sized domestic cat, so our default sits below what we use for the large pedigree breeds. Price it from a receipt: this line runs every month for the animal's whole life and small differences compound across fifteen years.
Litter, liners and deodoriser. Steady, unglamorous, and the line people leave out entirely when they add up what a cat costs. It is also the line a dog budget never has.
Parasite prevention, sold in weight bands. A cat who goes outdoors needs it carried the whole way rather than seasonally, and a tabby is often an indoor-outdoor cat. Cheaper as a monthly habit than as a treatment after an infestation.
A mixed-breed domestic cat is usually quoted below a pedigree, because insurers price the hereditary conditions a breed is known for and a tabby brings no breed with her. Type 0 if you plan to self-insure, and consider putting a similar figure aside each month instead.
The yearly exam, boosters and the dental work an older cat tends to need. Routine care only: a diagnosis has its own box below. Our default is ours and editable, and a clinic in a city prices well above one in a small town.
One significant health line set aside across the whole horizon: the work-up, imaging and ongoing management a serious diagnosis needs. A tabby carries no breed-specific risk list, so this is a flat savings target rather than a forecast dressed in odds. Replace our default with a quote from your own clinic.

$22,000 to $38,000 is a cat adopted or taken in, the intake block paid one way or the other, fed decently, litter and prevention carried all the way through, insurance held, yearly vet care with dental, and a fund set aside. This is where the defaults land, and both routes sit inside this band.

What this assumes, and where it could be wrong

Every one of these is a place the number could be off. They are here because you should be able to check our working, not because we are hedging.

A FREE TABBY IS NOT A CHEAPER TABBY, AND THAT IS THE WHOLE POINT OF THIS PAGE.
An adoption fee is a bundle rather than a price tag. The intake exam, the FeLV and FIV tests, the deworming, the kitten vaccine course, the spay or neuter and usually the microchip are done before the cat is handed to you, and the fee recovers a share of that work. A kitten from a neighbour's litter arrives with none of it done, so the identical block of work is still ahead of you at full clinic price. At our defaults the intake block is $600 against a $100 fee, and the free-kitten route finishes $320 above the adopted route on a ledger that is otherwise line-for-line the same. Ask a shelter which boxes are already ticked, then set the bundled dial to match what they tell you.
THE DEFAULTS ARE OURS; A SHELTER, A CLINIC AND YOUR LOCAL SHOPS SET THE REAL NUMBER.
Every figure here is priced by somebody: a rescue's fee schedule, a clinic's exam and surgery fees, an insurer's premium, a pet shop shelf. Where you live moves all of them, and a low-cost spay clinic and a full-service practice can quote very different numbers for the same operation. We have put in figures we think are reasonable starting points and made every one editable, because your quotes beat our defaults. Nothing on this page is drawn from a federal statistic, and this page takes no position either way on what statistics are out there, because we have not gone looking for one.

Tabby is a coat pattern, not a breed, so a tabby is priced as whatever cat is wearing the stripes rather than off a list of its own. The mackerel, classic, spotted and ticked patterns turn up in ordinary domestic shorthairs and in pedigree breeds alike, and the agouti markings that make a tabby are common enough that a great many cats carry them. That is good news for a budget: the acquisition line on this page is thin on either route, and what you are really deciding is whether to pay it up front to a shelter or later to a clinic.

THE RANGE ON THIS PAGE IS THE ROUTE FORK, NOT AN UNCERTAINTY BAND.
Elsewhere a low and a high usually mean the shoppable lines were flexed by some multiplier to show a spread. Here both ends are your own boxes read two ways. One end is the ledger as entered, with the fee paid and the bundled share of intake struck out. The other is the same cat taken in for nothing with all four intake lines paid at full price. Everything after the entry block is held identical between them, because a cat costs the same to feed whichever door she came through. Set the bundled share to 0 and the fee to 0 and the two ends become one figure.

The entry block is a thin slice of the ledger even when you pay all of it, and the page would rather say so than oversell its own finding. At our defaults the fee, the full intake block and the starter gear come to $950 against a total of $27,480 across fifteen years, about 3.5 percent. The fork between the routes is worth knowing because it runs backwards from how it looks, not because it is where the money is. The money is food, litter, prevention and fifteen years of vet care, and those lines are identical on both routes.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a tabby cat cost?
There is no tabby price, because tabby is a coat pattern rather than a breed and no price list applies to a pattern. In practice a tabby is an ordinary domestic cat, so the realistic routes are a shelter fee, a neighbour's litter or a cat who turned up on the porch, and none of them charges anything for the markings. The number worth having is the one underneath: at our defaults the fee, the intake work and the starter gear together are about 3.5 percent of what the cat costs across fifteen years. The calculator above puts the entry block and the lifetime beside each other so you can see both at once.
Is it cheaper to take a free kitten than to adopt from a shelter?
Usually not, and that is the finding this page is built around. An adoption fee buys a bundle: the intake exam, the FeLV and FIV tests, the deworming, the vaccine course, the spay or neuter and generally the microchip are done before you take the cat home. A free kitten arrives with none of that done, so the same work is ahead of you at full clinic price. At our defaults that block is $600 while the fee is $100, and the free route finishes $320 higher. The dial on this page lets you set how much of the block your particular shelter has already covered, because it varies and you should ask rather than assume.
What does the intake work on a cat of unknown history actually involve?
A physical exam, tests for feline leukaemia and FIV, a faecal check and deworming, and treatment for the ear mites and fleas a stray usually arrives with. Then the core kitten vaccine course, given as a series of visits over several weeks rather than in one appointment, plus rabies where your state requires it, then the spay or neuter, then the chip and its registration. The retrovirus tests matter most if you already have cats at home, because that is the situation where finding out late is genuinely costly. A low-cost clinic will do much of this well below a full-service practice, so it is worth a phone call before you accept the first quote.
Does a tabby cost less to insure than a pedigree cat?
Generally a mixed-breed domestic cat is quoted below a pedigree, because insurers price the hereditary conditions a breed is known for and a tabby brings no breed with her. Our monthly default here sits below the one on our pedigree breed pages for that reason, and it is still ours rather than a quoted premium. Premiums also climb as a cat ages regardless of breed, so read the renewal terms rather than the first-year price. If you would rather self-insure, type 0 in that box and watch what it does to the total, then consider putting a similar amount aside each month into the health fund instead.
