How much does a pulling tractor cost?

Work out what a competition pulling tractor actually costs to put on the track, not what the donor machine costs to buy. Put in the base tractor or chassis, the engine build, the turbo or blower, the driveline, the cut tires, the weight package, the safety gear and the fabrication hours, and see the build total and what share of it the base machine really was. The tractor is the part people price first, and it is the part that matters least.

This is where a puller is made, and it is the line that separates a running project from a competitive one. Blueprinting, forged internals, ported heads, a serious valvetrain and a fuel system to match are each a real cost, and they scale with the class and the power target rather than with the size of the tractor. Price the whole build with the machinist, not the parts list on their own, because the labour on a competition engine is a large share of it and it is quoted by the hour.
The power adder the class allows: a turbocharger and its plumbing, or a supercharger and its drive. Put zero for a naturally aspirated class.

Boost is where the power actually comes from in most competitive classes, and it is a system rather than a single part: the charger itself, the manifolds, the intercooler or the water injection, the wastegate or the pop-off the rules require, and the plumbing to tie it together. Classes cap what you may run, sometimes by size and sometimes by count, so read the boost rules before you buy the charger. A naturally aspirated build zeroes this line and spends the money in the engine instead.

The hook is a brutal event for a driveline, and the farm parts underneath a donor tractor were designed for a very different life. A slipper or a competition clutch, a transmission built to hold, stub axles and a rear-end rated for the torque are the difference between a run and a broken weekend. Classes run to a weight limit, and getting to it deliberately, with a weight box hung out front where it does the most good, is part of how a machine is set up to pull rather than to spin or to wheelie. A pulling tractor is assembled far more than it is bolted together: mounts and brackets get made, a chassis gets braced, the boost and the fuel get plumbed, the wiring gets run, and the whole thing gets set up and sorted over more sessions than a first-timer expects. If a shop is doing it, this is billed by the hour; if you are doing it in your own shop, the hours are still real even though the invoice is not, and they are worth counting so the budget is honest.

Is the tractor the biggest part of the cost?

In a stock-appearing class the base machine carries more of the budget, because the rules keep it recognisable; in a modified or an open class it carries less, because the chassis is fabricated and wears almost nothing of a farm tractor. Either way, sizing the whole project by the price of the tractor is how a first build runs out of money before it runs down the track.
Can I build a pulling tractor cheaper by doing the work myself?
The fabrication line is the one you can move, and the calculator lets you move it: put your own shop rate in, or zero the rate and let the hours stand as your own time rather than cash. That genuinely changes the check, because fabrication for a race build is skilled hourly work and there is a lot of it. What it does not change is the parts: the engine machine work, the charger, the driveline and the safety gear are bought either way, and buying to a lower spec than the class requires is not a saving, because it fails at tech and gets bought again. Price it both ways here, with the labour in and with the labour zeroed, and the gap between the two totals is what your own hours are worth on this project.
