Semi trailer kingpin plate replacement cost calculator
Work out what replacing a semi trailer kingpin or the whole upper coupler plate will cost from the kingpin itself, the coupler plate if the assembly is going, the certified welding labor, and the inspection that returns the trailer to service. The pin looks cheap on its own, but the welding is structural work on a DOT-critical part that a certified shop has to burn out the old assembly and fit the new one to, and that is where the number lands. The calculator adds up your quote.
Typical range $964 – $1,808
- Kingpin (the part)$120
- Upper coupler plate$350
- Certified welding labor (hours × rate)$660
- Inspection & return to service$75
- Total$1,205

$500 to $1,500 is the pin fitted with a new upper coupler plate: the structural half of the job, certified welding to burn out the old assembly and set the new one. Ask whether the quote is pin-only or the whole coupler.
What this assumes, and where it could be wrong
Every one of these is a place the number could be off. They are here because you should be able to check our working, not because we are hedging.
THE PIN IS A SMALL PART; THE WELDING IS THE JOB.
The kingpin is a wear part with a legal minimum. The pin is gauged for shank and flange diameter, and once it wears past that measurement the coupling is out of spec regardless of how the plate looks. A shop checking the front will gauge the pin first and tell you whether a pin-only replacement clears it or the plate has to come out too.
The upper coupler plate is the larger half when it goes. If the plate is cracked, worn thin, or corroded, replacing it is the structural part of the job and the parts line rises with it. A pin set into a sound plate is a quicker repair; a full upper coupler replacement is why some quotes for the same trailer land far apart.
This is welding that has to be done to code by a shop set up for it. Coupler welds carry the load between tractor and trailer, so this is not a general repair-bay job; it is certified structural welding, and the labor rate reflects that certification. Corrosion, a seized or previously repaired assembly, or a plate welded rather than bolted turns the hours up more than any other factor.
The defaults are ours and are a starting point. The parts and the shop rate are yours, and the estimate turns most on whether the plate goes with the pin, how much corrosion the shop finds, and the certified welding rate in your area.
