Wall and perimeter draping (linear feet)

How many feet of wall or room perimeter you want draped, measured along the run.

Pipe-and-drape is priced by the linear foot, so this number, not the fabric, tends to decide the bill. Measure the actual runs you want covered rather than the whole room: a single feature wall behind the head table is a short run, while draping every wall of a bare hall to hide it is a long one. A drape company sets pipe every eight to ten feet, so ask whether the quote is per foot installed or per panel, and whether corners and returns are counted in.

Pipe-and-drape, per linear foot (dollars)

The installed price per foot of wall or perimeter draping.

This is the rate the drape company charges per foot for standard fabric, pipe and base delivered and hung. A taller ceiling needs taller drape and more of it, which lifts the rate, and a premium fabric or a lined panel sits above the standard line. Ask what height the quote assumes and whether it is for a single sheer or a fuller, gathered look, because the two can differ by half again on the same run.

Ceremony or head-table backdrop (dollars)

A draped feature wall behind the ceremony or the sweetheart table.

This is the piece that lands in the photographs, so couples often spend more here per square foot than on the perimeter. Price it as its own line: the frame, the fabric, any greenery, florals or a monogram fixed to it, and the crew to hang and dress it. A backdrop that has to stand freely on a lawn or in the round needs a heavier frame and ballast than one fixed to a wall, so tell the drape company where it goes before you accept a price.

Ceiling draping or canopy (dollars)

Fabric run overhead across the room or as a canopy over the dance floor or head table.

Ceiling work is the priciest kind of draping because it needs rigging points, a lift or a crew working at height, and far more fabric than a wall. Many venues insist their own crew or an approved rigger does anything suspended, which turns a rental price into a rental price plus a labour call-out. Ask the venue what may be hung from where, and whether a full ceiling, a partial swag over the dance floor, or a single canopy is what you actually want, before you price the whole room.

Entrance, arch or aisle draping (dollars)

Draped entrances, an arch or chuppah, or fabric along the aisle. These are smaller, self-contained pieces priced each rather than by the foot. An arch or chuppah that also carries florals is usually quoted by the florist or the drape company together, so confirm which supplier hangs the fabric and which dresses it, and whether the frame is a rental or yours to keep.

Uplighting behind the drape (dollars)

The lights tucked behind or below the fabric to colour it after dark.

Draping and uplighting are usually sold together because fabric without light reads flat, and light does much of what couples think the fabric is doing. Price it by the number of fixtures and whether they are static or programmable, and ask whether the drape company supplies and places them or whether that is a separate lighting hire. Wireless, battery fixtures cost more to rent but save the cable runs a venue may not allow.

Premium fabric or custom colour (dollars)

Zero if standard house fabric in a stock colour works. A lined velvet, a sequin panel, a custom-dyed colour or a specialty sheer is an upgrade over the standard drape and is quoted on top. Ask to see the actual swatch under the venue's light, because a colour that reads one way in a warehouse can read another under warm uplighting on the night.

Delivery, rigging, install and strike labour (dollars)

The crew time to deliver, rig, hang, then take down and collect the draping.

A hanging job is labour before it is fabric, and this line is where two quotes on the same drape can part ways. It covers the delivery, the install crew, any lift or rigging, and the strike after the last guest leaves, which often runs late and can carry an overtime rate. Ask for the labour itemised apart from the rental so you can compare two companies on the same basis, and confirm whether the venue charges its own crew or a rigging fee on top.

Cover for what a hanging job adds late: a venue rigging fee or approved-crew requirement discovered after you booked, a late strike that runs into overtime, and the extra footage a walk-through finds once you measure the real room.
