Sprinkler spring startup cost calculator

Work out what it costs to turn your sprinkler system on for the season from the service call, the number of zones, and anything that needs fixing after the winter. The startup itself is priced by the zone; a cracked head or a broken line found during the walk is extra, and where the code requires a backflow test that is a separate line. What this assumes, and where it could be wrong

Every one of these is a place the number could be off. They are here because you should be able to check our working, not because we are hedging.

THE ZONE COUNT IS THE STARTUP, NOT THE LAWN SIZE.
A spring startup is labor: open the master valve, charge the lines slowly so a dry pipe does not hammer, then walk to every zone, run it, and adjust or clean each head. More zones means more heads to walk and more valves to check, so a twelve-zone property costs roughly twice a six-zone one at the same rate, whatever the lawn measures. That is why the zone count, not the square footage, is the input that moves the startup line

The startup finds the winter damage; it does not include it. Water left in a head or an above-ground line freezes and cracks, and you only see it when the system is back under pressure. A startup quote covers turning the system on and checking it; the broken head or split pipe it uncovers is a separate repair, which is why repairs are their own line and often the reason the final bill is higher than the quote.

A backflow test is a local requirement, not a national one. Many jurisdictions require a certified annual test of the backflow preventer that stops irrigation water flowing back into the drinking supply, and some let the same contractor do it at startup. Whether you need one, and what it costs, depends on your city, so it is a line you fill from your own quote or leave at zero.

A flat-fee startup and a per-zone startup are two ways to quote the same job. Some contractors charge one flat price for a standard startup covering up to a set number of zones; others charge a smaller base plus a per-zone rate. To model a flat quote, put the whole figure in the service call and set the per-zone charge to zero; to model a per-zone quote, split it. Either way the total is what you compare.
