Hound dog cost calculator
Work out what a hound costs over its whole life, not just what a breeder or a rescue asks at the door. "Hound" is not a breed, it is a job: a dog bred to follow a scent along the ground or an eye on a bolting target, which is to say a dog built to leave. That is why a hound budget needs a line most dog budgets skip. This calculator totals the purchase, the setup, the decade of keep, and the two containment lines a hound actually needs, a secure fence and recall training, so you can see how small that one-time hound tax is next to the years of keep it protects.
Typical range $27,010 – $27,410

$22,000 to $32,000 is a breeder puppy or a rescue, a secure fence built once, recall training done properly, insurance running the whole way, and a decade-plus of food, prevention and routine vet care. This is where the defaults land, and the recurring keep is the larger share of it.
What this assumes, and where it could be wrong
Every one of these is a place the number could be off. They are here because you should be able to check our working, not because we are hedging.
THE DEFAULTS ARE OURS; THE BREEDER, THE RESCUE, THE FENCE CONTRACTOR, THE INSURER AND YOUR VET SET THE REAL NUMBER.
THE FENCE AND THE RECALL ARE THE HOUND TAX, AND THEY ARE THE LINE A GENERIC DOG BUDGET SKIPS.
THE DECADE OF KEEP IS STILL THE BULK OF THE ANSWER.
The horizon is a planning number, not a lifespan. Twelve years is the span we spread the recurring lines across; it is ours and editable, and it is explicitly not a measured lifespan for any hound, which we hold no data on and do not claim. If you want to budget across a different number of years, type it and every recurring line rescales with it.
If you already have a secure yard, or if you adopt, trim the one-time lines honestly. Set the fencing box to zero if your boundary already holds a determined dog, and lower the setup line if the rescue hound arrives already neutered and vaccinated. The calculator cannot know your situation, so it leaves those boxes to you: drop them to what is genuinely still to pay, and the total falls with them.
