Every line here is priced by a person: a breeder's fee, your vet's schedule, an insurer's premium, a kennel's nightly rate, a groomer's charge, whatever the skin care costs where you shop. Where you live moves all of them, and your climate moves the wardrobe line hard on this particular page. We have put in figures we think are reasonable starting points and made every one editable, because your quotes beat our defaults. Nothing here is drawn from a federal statistic, because a breed's lifetime cost is a budget rather than something anyone measures.
THE GROOMING LINE DOES NOT DISAPPEAR. IT CHANGES ITS NAME.
At our defaults the skin care and wardrobe lines together run $3,460 across the 10 year horizon, which is 11 percent of the $32,260 ledger. The professional grooming they stand in for, at the figure in the comparison box, would have been $3,600. The net difference is $140 across ten years, under 1 percent of the ledger, and a coated dog on otherwise identical numbers totals $32,400. If you were budgeting a hairless breed by deleting the grooming row and stopping there, that is the error this page exists to catch.
THAT $140 IS A STATEMENT ABOUT OUR TWO PLACEHOLDERS AND NOTHING MORE.
We did not go and price groomers, and we did not go and price moisturiser. We put in $18 a month for skin care, $130 a year for clothing and $30 a month for the grooming a coated dog would have had, all three of them ours and all three editable. The number that falls out of those is close to a wash, but the finding worth taking away is the shape rather than the figure: there are two sides here and you have to fill in both. Set the comparison box to what a groomer near you charges and the skin care box to what you would really spend, and read the trade off your own numbers.
