Therapy dog cost calculator
Work out what a therapy dog costs, and start by separating it from the animal it gets confused with. A service dog is task-trained to mitigate a handler's disability and the training is the product, which is why it runs into five figures. A therapy dog is usually the pet already asleep on your sofa, evaluated for temperament and registered with a volunteer organisation so the two of you can visit a hospital, a library or a care home. There is no dog to buy and no task training to commission. What there is is a modest setup and then a renewal that comes round for as long as you keep volunteering, plus the fuel to get there. The calculator totals both, and then does the thing the usual answer skips: because nearly all of that spending is fixed, it prices a single visit, which is the figure that tells you whether a registration you are barely using is worth renewing.
- Setup: class, evaluation, first clearance, gear (one-time)$510
- Registration & renewals (5 yr)$250
- Annual vet clearance (5 yr)$450
- Grooming, wipes & treats (5 yr)$600
- Travel to visits (5 yr)$720
- Total$2,530

$1,500 to $4,000 is where a regular volunteering team lands over several years, and where our defaults fall. A class before the evaluation, a registration that renews, a clearance every year, grooming for visits and a real drive to the facility. The setup is the visible part and the renewals are the part that quietly adds up.
What this assumes, and where it could be wrong
Every one of these is a place the number could be off. They are here because you should be able to check our working, not because we are hedging.
THE DEFAULTS ARE OURS; A TRAINING CLUB, A REGISTERING ORGANISATION AND YOUR VET SET THE REAL NUMBER.
A THERAPY DOG IS NOT A SERVICE DOG, WHICH IS WHY THIS PAGE IS SHAPED NOTHING LIKE THAT ONE.
THE REGISTRATION FEE EVERYONE QUOTES IS THE SMALL PART, BECAUSE IT COMES ROUND AGAIN.
NEARLY ALL OF IT IS FIXED, SO THE HONEST PRICE IS PER VISIT AND FREQUENCY SETS IT.
COST PER VISIT IS A BUDGETING TOOL AND A SLIGHTLY COLD ONE, SO HERE IS WHAT IT IS NOT FOR.
One thing this page will not do is tell you which organisation to register with, or which facilities will accept that registration. Therapy dog registration is not a public-access right, a therapy dog is not an emotional support animal and is not a service dog, and the three are treated differently by facilities and by law. Which organisation a given hospital or school recognises is a question for that facility and that organisation, and the answer changes by building. What the arithmetic can honestly do is show you the renewal treadmill before you sign up for it, and price a visit so you can decide with open eyes. Put your own quotes in the boxes and your own schedule in the visits field, and the decision stays yours.
